I am here to appreciate the creative pioneer of 70s Pink Floyd. He is a brilliant lyricist and technician.
I was inspired to write this after listening to Dark Side for the first time in a while.

I'm so very glad someone made this thread! I was going to, One Of These Days... I kept putting it off because, me being me, of course I'd have had to come up with both a clever title and a massive first post about all the things I love about Roger. As it is, I will just quickly note that besides his PHENOMENAL lyrical prowess (I recently had an epiphany about 'Echoes' that made me love it 50x more than I already did, which I'd thought impossible), I feel that his singing is rather underrated. Sure he's not got the best voice in the world, but his range is pretty impressive (four octaves and about six notes, I think, which is wider than Sir Paul McCartney's! -- by maybe three notes), and his performances can be mind-blowing -- he is a distinctly theatrical vocalist. For examples, I point you to 'SOYCD', most of Animals, and everything on The Wall (though I feel like he might be milking it a bit on the latter album). Oh, yeah, not to mention 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene'. Just don't let him sing 'Wish You Were Here'... (Sorry) This is trivial, but I'm also a fan of his facial expressions, both onstage and in interviews. He's fun to watch. Oh, and also his habit of going 'Mmm' every five minutes. Sorry again.

Might I add that he aged quite well. He was a freaky looking young man, but nowadays he looks pretty good. Well done Rog!

Yay! One for Roggie! I too was thinking about creating one of these for him, but I had no ideas for a creative title... We'll figure one out soon. Okay, now, of course you can't forget or deny his UNBELIEVABLE musical and lyrical talent (I'd never forgive you ), but to be humbly honest (and as you probably already know ) I also quite like his looks, too. He's a lovely, tall and handsome lad with a cute (albeit sometimes creepy, I'll give you that one Loony ) grin, beautiful arms and hands, an incredible fashion taste and a nice voice to boot. What's more to love?

I thought of a good name for the thread: trying to break his balls

^Meh.
Possible ideas (most of which are entirely un-serious): The Pros of Roger Waters The Fountain of Rogerly Waters Witness the Man Who Raves at the Wall
Hmm, this is harder than David's or Rick's. :/

Decided to pick on Roggie a bit (but only lovingly, so it's not entirely at odds with the thread): He's said himself that he finds it hard to pitch. In the early days, Rick would have to tune his bass for him, and even later (circa 1970) there's footage of David lending his expertise to Roger's bass mid-performance (a live version of 'Cymbaline'): *shakes head and tsks affectionately* It's also my observation that, in his songwriting, Roger's quite fond of more linear melodies, as contrasted with the more, well, melodic melodies penned by David (who can sing those kinds of tunes properly). I was wearing my music-critic hat and expounding about this to my dad: I have a theory that this vocal elasticity (a very nice phrase, if I may say so myself ) is part and parcel of his four-and-a-half-octave range, because while he should be a low tenor, we find him going to all sorts of less-than-reasonable places, from the very low to a full-voice C5 and falsetto whoops/shrieks/screams/inhuman noises above. (For more detail, go here, which is where my info comes from.) After about a minute of my verbose exposition, my dad concisely observed, 'So he's kind of like a scattergun -- makes up for in range what he lacks in precision?' I pretty much hit the floor at that truly Waters-esque bit of verbal head-hitting nailery. And, of course, we can't forget the theatricality of his performances -- he's really more of a thespian than strictly a vocalist. His vocals are supposed to suit the message, which they usually do.

Nice to hear from a guy who wrote Animals and The Wall, eh? Though they are, ultimately, optimistic (at least Animals is, I'm not sure about The Wall), they are pretty cynical.

...I just love everything he does on Animals! His finest hour, in my opinion -- before he got too self-indulgent. I especially like the chuckle under the word 'treat' in the line 'Mary you're nearly a treat' from Pigs. It's adorable, in a sneery, vitriolic Roger way. By far my favourite bit of that song, though, is the WOO! after the first couplet. It practically makes me high. I also love his manic cackles in Dogs and Sheep (right after 'Bleating and babbling we fell on his neck with a scream') much more than I should.

I've altered the title of the thread to a name suggested by The Lunatic. If we are talking Animals, I love the "all alone, dying of cancer ah ahh" from Dogs.

Needless to say, I appreciated Roger quite a lot yesterday. Even if you don't always agree with him, you have to appreciate his conviction -- he's kind of reminiscent of John Lennon in that he believes what he believes and there's no BS about him.

Oh, (that's the dog) , that's a tough one. I've wrestled with it many a time myself. I think I even posted about it in the 'You Know You're A Hardcore...' thread saying '...when you actually find Roger cute '.
I can't give you an easy answer. You're going to have to search your soul for this one, since it is, after all, subjective. But I'm pretty sure Mad Bugger and I decided that, to us at least, he is somewhat cute, at certain times at least. (MB might even go further and say all the times.)
