Discuss this album here...
The live disc is all right, and the studio album is... patchy. I rarely listen to it. 'Grantchester Meadows' is a gorgeouslovely piece of poetry, and I suppose some of 'Sysyphus' and 'The Narrow Way' aren't bad either... I shall have to revisit them.

I like listening to this every once in a while. I think what you like about Atom Heart Mother is what I like about Ummagumma.

I really like the studio disc (except for Grantchester Meadows. That song is boring and the obvious loop of bird sounds gets annoying). I like weird music.

I can get that, I suppose; I think if I gave this one a couple more listens it'd grow on me. I really like the studio disc (except for Grantchester Meadows. Well, to each his own, I suppose, because Mad Bugger and I think that's pretty much the best song on the album.

The live disc is horrid. The studio disc is good though.

I've heard a few songs from the album, and I can say that I think I like the live version of Careful With That Axe, Eugene better than the studio recording.

Oh, the live versions of that song are almost always superior to the studio version, in my opinion. In fact, I hardly ever listen to the original record -- this one is my favourite, but they're mostly all good.

The Dark Side Of The Spoon I actually hardly ever listen to that version of 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' (I find it, like the recorded version, to be much too fast, and the fact that The Scream precedes The Drum Fill bothers me) and, indeed, very much of the live part of Ummagumma.
I vastly prefer listening to all the other live versions of those songs which have been released in the Early Years box-set. My favourite version of 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' has to be either the Pompeii one or the one at Brighton in 1972. This BBC version is also good. The Scream can be variable and sometimes it picks up better than other times, but it's one of the defining moments in Pink Floyd's catalogue.
