So I listened to this one again last night (I had heard it a couple times already, but not really thought of it much), and I was surprised by how pleasant it was. Sure it's not their most interesting album (you cannot expect to headbang), but for what it is -- an album full of atmospheric keyboard-based jams, really, released in tribute to Rick Wright and generally Pink Floyd's legacy -- it does nicely. Perhaps it's the Rick part that sold me, being such a softie as I am for all things Rick.
The band footage in the 'Louder Than Words' video breaks my heart every time. Especially @3:02. Bittersweet.
Apart from that track, it does feel a little bit unfinished in some parts... like incomplete demos which could have become good songs, given a proper melody and some lyrics.
I also noticed that David's guitar playing was very restrained here, compared to the previous album; I think he didn't want to overwhelm the keyboards, which are supposed to be highlighted. As much as I love his guitaring, it can get a bit much, and does on The Division Bell, so I felt the guitar-keyboard balance was better here.
My favourite tracks are the opener and 'Autumn '68' (A Nice Pair with 'Summer '68', even if it was probably recorded in June of 1969).
In the end, I think, it just makes me miss what Pink Floyd was in their heyday even more, but it's a suitable parting shot.
Has anyone else heard it? What did you think?
Edit: I just noticed that this album was released on the same day as Ummagumma.
