Happy 50th birthday, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn! I gave it a nice listen this morning after much waiting; I forgot how much I love Interstellar Overdrive! What a fun album.

^^^ Haha! π It seems that I have now been inspired to do the same. π (I would have posted this earlier on the actual anniversary, but there were image-sizing difficulties ) Ta-da!

HAPPY FIVE-OH, PIPER
Can't wait to give it my first listen in two months! It got phenomenally amazinger after not having heard it in so long. I just love the colours and characters of it -- it's such a fun, colourful album, but at the same time it's got tinges of darkness -- madness, I suppose -- round the edges. It's fascinatingly fae.

THIS IS AMAZING
I love seeing David playing some Barrett-style madness instead of his usual delicate sound of thunder -- he sure looks like he's enjoying it!

Cool find, Loony! It sure is interesting hearing David sing Syd's part. Oh, and I love it when David sings along with the ooohhooohhooohhooohhooohhooohhooohhooohh's

I had a very nice time with this album today. It was quite late and already dark outside and I had to walk home a few kilometres from a saxophone rehearsal (my bike's broken, grrrr) and on my walk, I listened to Piper on my headphones. That was a truly magical experience, I can tell you. I generally find this album strongly resembling an enchanted forest with many magical creatures in there but when listening to it outside in the dark, every group of bushes suddenly turned into gnomes. But Pow R Toc H was reeeaaally scary in the dark... I can't listen to this album without being deeply in awe of Syd. He must have seen the world with completely different eyes than most of us, his imagination seems endless! And another thing I absolutely love: the many different noises made with the human voice that one can find in this album. The beginning of Pow R Toc H, the 'Doctor, Doctor' in Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk, the crazy laughter at the end of Bike and there's so many more of them... That's music from another planet! By the way, have you already played Bike on dear Gerald once, The Dark Side Of The Spoon ?

thinyoungmoon Sorry to hear about your bike. Syd has a bike, you know; he'd give it to you if he could, but he borrowed it. I quite agree with you about its enchanted-forestness and the utter uniqueness of Syd's vision!

Drew this in commemoration of Piper's birthday two days ago.
There's a drawing for every song on the album.
{Spoiler}β1. Astronomy Domine is represented by the space all above Syd, there, with astrological symbols for Jupiter and Saturn (but not Oberon Miranda and Titania) and Neptune, and also the sun and Earth and Capricorn. β
β2. Lucifer Sam, Siam cat prowls below a literal piper at the gates of dawn 3. Rick, with cat-ears, hovers above Matilda Motherβ's dollhouse darkness old perfume 4. Flaming: Syd stands on a cloud of eiderdown studded with buttercups and dandelions 5. Pow R Toc H: Roger hooting next to a monkey, which the song's opening sounds like 6. Take Up Thy Stethoscope (on the other side of Rog) and Walk! 7. Interstellar Overdrive drives all about behind Syd 8. The Gnome stands just below Nick Mason 9. Chapter 24's Sunset/Sunrise just left of the Gnome 10. The Scarecrow is above Nick (yes I messed up the order)
11. A Bike with bell/basket/things to make it look good, and a cloak, dish of gingerbread men, and other random bells and whistles and ducks.
