Gave this a 1.5th listen yesterday (I'd heard part of it previously) and I quite liked it. My favourites are Flaming ('Yippee, you can't see me, but I can you' ) and Bike ('I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it'). I used this album to finally convince my dad (who's only heard the post-Barrett ones) that PF were a psychedelic rock band, at least wonsaponatime.

'Tis great. It is very different to the rest of Pink Floyd's discography but I still like it a lot, Barrett's surreal wordplay is great. Chapter 24 and Astronomy Domine are other good 'uns from the album and I'm gonna mention Arnold Layne too because I love that song!

Even though it doesn't have the deep lyrics that post-Barrett PF has, I think Piper is an awesome album, I would even say one of their best. And as silly as Bike may be, it's one of my favourites along with Chapter 24, The Scarecrow, and The Gnome. Not to say the cover is really cool.

Silly is awesome! *says the self-proclaimed queen of silly* The silliness is the best thing about it. It's such a wonderful contrast to things like 'Time', which is about as heavy (very heavy, Doc) as it gets.

Happy birthday, Piper! Come on you painter you piper you prisoner and SHINE! It's a prime piece of psychedelia, a snippet of the times; and it makes a wonderful 'Introductory Course to the Mad Wonders of Syd Barrett's Mindscape'. Listening to it, one likes to think that ever so high alone in the clouds all blue somewhere, there's a second scene that fights between the blue you once knew: where sad scarecrows are made happy, gnomes stay eating, drinking in their homes, buttercups cup the light, and beautiful people freely lend each other their (borrowed) bikes-with-basket-bell-that-rings-and-things, while reading the I Ching and fairy tales to the sound of the music that helps to ease the pain and motivate the brain; and floating down, the sound resounds around the icy waters underground.

I like Piper, it's a more or less happy album without too many deep lyrics, so I don't have to dig around in my brain to try and decipher methodical holier-than-thou lyrics.
(Not saying that Pink Floyd does that. (Well, they do in The Wall, and Dark Side, and the Final Cut, but whatever.))
Yep, a nice, happy, easy listening album.

Hehe, it ain't bad I suppose... okay, it is bad, but its so bad it's good. Does perfectly sum up how one feels when ill. And it's encouraging to the rest of us to see that even the Great Poets of Rock had to start somewhere.

I gave a quick listen to this album, which was recommended to me by Silly Girl/The Lunatic. I thought the intro to Astronomy Domine was tense and gave me chills, especially while looking at the album cover.

Back here already! I've just realised that I've heard The Gnome before, as a cover by Neil from the 80s British sitcom The Young Ones. I own his album Neil's Heavy Concept Album on CD, which is a brilliant parody and tribute to psychedelic rock albums from the late 60s like Sgt Pepper, Satanic Majesties, and of course The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. There are also several covers on it, including Traffic's Hole In My Shoe. Here's Neil's cover of The Gnome The Piper album also appears in the display on the front cover of Neil's Heavy Concept Album. redmp3.su/cover/3057850-460x460/neil-s-heavy-concept-album.jpg

I too listened to Piper before the later albums. I figured I would start at the beginning. I too was a little spooked by Astronomy Domine. I couldn't believe that music sounded like that! Unfortunately, the sound goes through major changes, and you won't be able to hear Syd's signature style for too much longer.

This album's 50th is coming up... I'm thinking of not listening to it until 5 August so I can listen to it with slightly fresher ears or something like that. It'll be hard to give it up, especially as half my music files decided to borrow this cover... I'm getting a bit tired of looking at those prismatic faces, to be sure.

Could just remove them all. BOT; Flaming is a great song, especially with the beginning part whooshing all over the middle, left, and, right stereo sections. Love that part.

I've been craving a listen to this album for at least a month now, but I've promised myself that I'll wait until the anniversary. It's so difficult.

^^^ Yep. I really wanted to pick it as my CD-of-the-day, but I had to settle for the Beatles' Live At The BBC instead.* {Spoiler} *but, hey, that's never bad. SOON, PIPER, SOON!

Happy 50th to one of the best albums ever released and possibly my favorite Pink Floyd album! This album will NEVER be forgotten.
