Yes he does.
(And yes, I'm on a mission to give them ALL appreciation threads... I *appreciate* appreciation threads. Three down, two to go!)
So anyway, I was watching Dave and Rick being awesome at 'Echoes' again, and once more witnessed the death of my guitarist ego (for the hundredth time), which inspired this meme:
^^He is always doing this to me. It'd be very annoying if it weren't so awesome.
David Gilmour is my favourite living guitarist (if only because George Harrison is, sadly, deceased ) and a fantastic singer to boot, although his singing is usually overshadowed by his guitaring, and for good reason-- his playing is mind-blowingly brilliant. The main reason I love his playing is because he's insanely distinctive-- you hear a Gilmour lick, and you immediately go, 'That's Dave.' (I once did that with Paul McCartney's 'No More Lonely Nights'-- it was a great Floydy moment. ) His guitar sound really became the sound of Pink Floyd in the '70s, so much so that if you were raised on their '70s albums as I was, you might wonder that it was the same band when you hear the pre-Gilmour recordings. (Really, it wasn't the same band... but that's another story.)
What was I saying... oh yes, his voice. I love it almost more than I love his guitaring. He's got a great voice, probably the best in the Floyd (that doesn't mean he's the best singer/vocalist, mind you); it's neither always gravelly or always sweet, but some of both, depending on the song, style, time of day, etc. In other words, it's very versatile, but always quite Dave. I liken it to a mixture of gravel and honey. What also astounds me is how well he's kept it, even to this day. He still sounds pretty much like he did thirty years ago, which is more than can be said for many (especially Paul McCartney). Not quite as light and, well, young as twentysomething Dave, but pretty darn good for a Relic of 70.
Since we're here, we mustn't forget a special mention of his musical partnership with Rick-- Dave has stated that he and Rick had something akin to telepathy when it came to improvising together. Whatever they had, it was 'Louder Than Words'... They really knew how to play around each other, and Rick's atmospheric keyboards suited David's incisive and emotive guitar-work perfectly.
I am also interested in hearing what people's favourite Gilmour solos/licks/bits are; my top favourite solo ever has to be 'Time', which is a very melodic example, and which does fearfully nice things to my consciousness when I don the headphones and let it roll. But there are so many of them, and they're all so fabulous, it's very difficult to choose; second places and honourable mentions to (in no particular order) the deservedly lauded 'Comfortably Numb' solos (which are very bad about utterly destroying my guitarist-ego), everything in 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' (they are pretty much the focus of the piece), the bottleneck slide in 'Wots... Uh The Deal' (very reminiscent of the lovely George Harrison), and last-but-not-least the lap slide in 'Breathe' (one of the finest pieces of music ever recorded, and the slide is hugely vital to the atmosphere of it).
So, fellow Crazy Diamonds, what are your favourite Gilmourishnesses?
