I amn't too sure what this thread is about, except that I'm having a Rick day and I need a dedicated space to say that. So I guess it'll be a Rick Wright appreciation thread. Because I kept forgetting that he died, and then I read this and it suddenly hit home. So now I'm kind of feeling like one generally does on a person's anniversary of death, except that I ought to have waited till 15 September, but ya know. I was thinking about Dave not playing ' Echoes' live at Pompeii, and sending respect his way because he refuses to, despite what his fans are begging for-- I quite concur with him, it would be completely wrong to play it without Rick; it's just such a Dave-and-Rick-driven song, vocally and musically. And then I realised that this means he hasn't played it since 2008 at least, and never will again. Not to mention countless other moments of Gilmour-Wright chemistry/magic that can't happen... and it just breaks me heart, so it does. One thing I must add to a thread officially devoted to Rick-appreciation is that I am very fond of his voice as well as his playing, and do wish that he had sang more. I know that he never liked his singing very much, or was very comfortable doing vocals, which is a true pity, for, as displayed on 'Echoes' in particular, he had a gorgeous harmony voice; I have a mile-high soft spot for his occasional lead vocals as well (though I'll readily admit that Roger, Dave, and Syd were more diverse vocalists). He was content not to be the star, but shone anyway, in his own way. I don't even know him that well, apart from his occasional mystifying lyrical contributions to Pink Floyd, a few interviews, his general adorability , and his music, but there's something about Rick that I find rather intriguing. Perhaps it's his George-Harrison-like 'quiet/mystical one' image; I'm not sure. But, even with the numerous records that we have at our fingertips to immerse ourselves in, I miss him and his music anyway. Here's my Ricky-Pink-Floyd-songs list (I think I missed a few, but oh wells): 'Remember A Day' 'See-Saw' 'Sysyphus (all four parts)' 'Paintbox' 'Summer '68' 'Echoes' 'Burning Bridges' 'Mudmen' Stay' 'The Great Gig In The Sky' 'Us And Them' 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond (part IX)' 'Cluster One' and 'Marooned' 'Wearing The Inside Out'

I would just like to add before I shrink away back into nonexistence that Rick was an integral member of the PF, and I believe he is way too underappreciated so cheers for the thread. In a way, he was the forgotten genius of the group-- just like George... ...and I must say here that I don't care what you say-- 'Summer '68' is a marsterpeas thankye very much.

People keep saying that so I don't think he's underappreciated anymoweh, but perhaps he was when he was alive (damn, I hate it when that happens) In a way, he was the forgotten genius of the group-- just like George...
and like George, fondly remembered by a small, select, fiercely loyal fan-group. ...and I must say here that I don't care what you say-- 'Summer '68' is a marsterpeas thankye very much. I quite likes it, mostly listen for Ricks though. I do think 'Remember A Day' is a propper marsterpeas. Been learning 'The Great Gig In The Sky' as mentioned numerously elsewheres, and I appreciated Rick so hard I almost broke the piano. It's just such an incredible set of chordals, and yet, as all classic Wrightleyness, so understated that you hardly notices it... until you try it and realise what a masterly peas it is. (*puts on music critic hat*) Rick pulls out all stops (organ pun intended) on the dynamic, taking full advantage of the 'piano' side of the appropriately named pianoforte, and the tasteful touches of sweet organ, grudgingly admiring bass, and a fiery performance from Nick accentuate the piece perfectly. (*takes hat off*) Not to mention Clare Torry's highly admirable caterwaul of emotions (I like the soft bit toward the end best, but the whole thing is really great). I think I might learn 'Remember A Day' or 'Summer '68' next-- or perhaps 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' part IX, which could be my favourite, particularly if I am in a Rick mood as I am now. I might also appreciate some of Rick's soloey stuffs if I can get my ears on them-- Broken China has proved elusive on the YouTubes.

As Seamus mentioned earlier: cheers to this thread! I've been in a bit of a Rick-y mood today, so ended up listening to The Great Gig in The Sky quite a few times (heck, now I'm going to listen to it more). I can honestly say that I've come to appreciate him a whole lot more now than when I did in the beginning of my Crazy-Diamond-dom; I'm just in love with his piano-ing on the above-mentioned tune. The incredible and often overwhelming somberness can be felt with each press of a key, and I can most undoubtedly say that he has/had* an unbelievable amount of talent when it comes/came* to music. Even before I became a fan of Pink Floyd, I was absolutely blown away by Rick's vocals in the bridges of Time. Back then, I hadn't a clue who actually sang that part, but I knew that whoever did sing it was definitely in the running for my favourite member of the band. In fact, the two left standing for me to decide might just be Roger and Rick. *Don't worry, The Lunatic , I often forget he's gone too.

YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 'The Great Pig In the Sky' is such an incredibly well-crafted and well-performed piece, but you hardly notice it until you pay specific attention (like, for instance, if you try and learn it by ear like a silly fool ); that's how good it is. Rick has always had a talent for disappearing into the background and unnoticeably making the whole song what it is.

(And Nick and Dave and Syd. ) Actually I thought for the longest time that 'Time' was all sung by one person; by the time I found out otherwise, I already had developed a soft spot for our Richard so I liked it even more.

Last night, I was listening to 'Breathe', and when I got to that fabulous organ swell right before 'Run, rabbit run', I found myself imagining hearing the song live and squealing (or shouting) 'RIIIIICK' at that bit, and Rick hearing it and being inordinately pleased... and then a sharp lancet of pain pierced my heart as I remembered that that is not to be.

This thread has been much too sad and somber, and is that what Ricky would'a wanted.....? Erm, I'm actually not sure, but let's turn this Floydy-frown upside-down! HAVE A HAPPY-SMILEY-WILEY-BEARDY RICK!!!!!! :3
Sidenote: I have now learned that it is exceptionally difficult to find photos of Richard Wright smiling.

I'm not sure either, but I suppose the sadandsomber tone matches his rather melancholy musical tendencies. I don't really know if he was a happyhappy or gloomy person, but he always struck me as rather melancholy at least, probably mostly because of the minor key pianoing and big doe eyes.
Erm, I'm actually not sure, but let's turn this Floydy-frown upside-down!
Capital notion! We can start with a massive picspam that will make us all smile.
Sidenote: I have now learned that it is exceptionally difficult to find photos of Richard Wright smiling. Hmm, you are quite Wright. I guess I never noticed because he is always making me smile. It seems he wasn't a very smiley person, but gosh, when he did smile... (ignore the excessive creepiness of Roger and only focus on the blinding ray of sunshine that is Ricky) and this is at least cheery almost smiling... distant smileys on the horizon... SMILE and finally, I will just leave this here for a bit of a larf Speaking of Rick's grand piano, I spent a great deal of my morning attempting to learn 'Remember A Day' and appreciating Rick a great deal in the process. I also had a bash at 'Summer '68' but I think that might be a project for another day.

Here it is: Rickysongs I didn't have time to listen to the whole thing, but I did listen to a few tracks. Here's what I think: SOYCD (Part IX): Very cool. Not my favourite, though I'm sure it'll grow on me as I listen to the whole album. Summer '68: This is so pretty! I love Ricky's voice on this one. If (ok, I have to admit that I did digress a little and listen to other Floyd tracks): A very nice piece! I don't think I've ever heard Roger sing that way before, though I did recognise his voice! Fat Old Sun (more digression): This is sooooo beautiful!!! The lyrics are near perfect, and so is David's voice (I recognised his too)! So far, I'd have to say that this is my favourite track from Atom Heart Mother. We'll see, though! All in all, you're just another brick in the wall thanks a ton for the playlist, FP!

What?! You need to listen to it ALL TOGETHER NOW with the rest of the song. That piece is just intended as a snippet for Rick-sampling. It doesn't have the proper effect if it's knocking about by itself instead of being The Grand Finale of a twenty-minute-long epic-- you must receive it in CONTEXT, see. After all, 'Shine On' is only the best single piece of work that the Floyd ever did, so it has to stay in one chunk for maximum awesomeness. (I'm done now)

You just go listen to the whole album, now, and I've got a rather cold thread all ready and waiting for ye. I DOES CONCUR with everything you said. Roger's voice on 'If' is both unmistakably Roger and somewhat unique in his catalogue (not completely; I think he sand like that somewhere else, possibly 'Grantchester Meadows' off Ummagumma). 'Fat Old Sun' is one of the most gorgeous songs PF ever did, and certainly Dave's strongest lyric. (Dave doesn't do lyrics much, but when he does them...)

Well, ladies and laddies, it's only five (5) days till the fabulous Rickywleft's birthday, so I expect this thread to see loads of use! That day happens to be the very day that one of my friends (who, along with Dad Pinkerton, is partly responstable for getting me hooked on the PF sound) is holding her birthday party, so I shall be taking tea with her in the afternoon, but I will try to do a luvely drawing in the upcoming days and listen to at least part of my Rickysongs playlist in the morning. I love birthdays!

^^That third pic though-- if Syd had the best (psychedelic) fashion sense, Rick's was undoubtedly the most cringeworthy. Anyway, HERE COMETH THE SCRIBBLES! (A day late, but let's pretend his birthday is three days long.) My first Technicolour TM portrait! I'm not sure if it's very good, but it was a learning experience. Laughing smiling Ricky is a joy to draw anyway! And a more conventional B/W portrait, which I did just in case the above one was too awful for posting and because any excuse to draw a gorgeous man: I had fun with this one, weird angle and all... god I LOVE drawing his hair, it's SO TEXTURED

My favourite is Nick's-- his gentle sense of humour and observations are spot-on. Understandably Roger's and Dave's are briefer, as Roger and Rick never got on that well and Dave is not the most verbally expressive person. Ready thy handkerchiefs before thou read'st! *Sorry I just committed the utmost treason by referencing two Harrisongs-- I couldn't resist!

Rick Wright - The chord progression master. I love his extended suites, especially Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Echoes. He is a very underrated song writer.
