THIS GUY IS AWESOME
In fact, I do believe he is my favouritest drummerist ever (my appleogies to Ringo, whom I love dearly). He has quite a soft touch-- he doesn't bash as hard as he can unless that is called for-- and much of the time, that gentle touch is just what is needed for those meditative, meandering, spacey jams that consist Pink Floyd's music. Nick's drumming doesn't just accentuate the song; in many cases, it makes it. I have been known to lose all traces of sanity when listening to his fills in the 4/4 section of 'Money'-- there is just SO MUCH going on, and it's all brilliant. There are so many 'Floyd moments that grab me' involving an especially fab Nickism. No Pink Floyd song is complete until Nick comes in*. *Except 'Fat Old Sun', in which Dave fills in (no pun intended) for Nick and does quite passably for only a guitarist.

I think the title of this thread is possibly the best thing I have ever seen Why thank you *takes a bow* but I don't think it was quite original. I nipped the 'anti-crust' thing off of a Floyd meme that was floating round the Internets... I think, anyway... can't find it now

Nicky-grabby-moment: the drum pattern in 'Have A Cigar' really stuck out to me when I was listening to it earlier. It's a very idiosyncratic riff, and the little snare-hi-hat fill at the end accentuates it perfectly (not to mention the rest). It struck me as almost Ringo-ish, the way he plays to the riff -- vaguely reminiscent of the inimitable 'Come Together' fill-thingy, only not quite as pronounced.

The syncopated beats on Mother make the song a lot more groovy and somehow more emotional. Not sure how he did it, but Nick Mason is very expressive with his light and tight playing.

Hey, it looks like they got Jeff Porcaro, who's much better than Nick. I guess that's why the drums stood out to me, they were played by one of the best of the generation.

Silly Dad* has been appreciating Nick a lot lately (and, of course, I was appreciating right along with him ); he said he never really listened that closely to Nick's drumming until he saw some bits of Live At Pompeii, and seeing so much of Nick and how involved he was, the way he kept tabs on his band-mates, really made dad pay attention to the drum parts in his favourite Floyd tunes**. He really digs 'Pigs (Three Different Ones)', and the other week discovered this amazing little fill that they repeat that just enhances the song sevenfold at least. After he told me about it, I of course had to listen to it, and there are actually four different ones -- how disappointing that there weren't three, especially as the fourth seemed a bit extra -- the first is at approximately 4:41, the second at 5:41, the third at 6:42, and the last at 6:56. It's kind of a stuttery, offbeat job. *Wrong forum, but the name will persist. **An absurdly weak name for those masterful musical epics and mini-epics.

I want a T-shirt that says ' member of the Anti-Crust Nick Mason Fan Club' on it. Absolutely curtains no one would get it except a few choice hardcore Floyd fans. It'd be BRILLIANT!

The Lunatic, now that you're on your Zeppelin kick, how does John Bonham compare to Nick Mason to you?

I love them both. One's strength is his soft touch (You're a Soft Touch, baby), the other's strength is his not-soft touch... and they both have great moustaches! But honestly, they're both perfect for their respective bands, which are very, very different... so why compare Apples And Oranges? You'd only end up Dazed And Confused!

Oops, Nick ain't on 'Mother'. They used a session musician instead. 😬 Sooo... funnily enough, until yesterday, I never even noticed the drumming on 'Mother'. Yesterday I recalled this discussion and decided to pay careful attention to it and compared it with 'Comfortably Numb' (which I happened to have next in the queue -- don't shoot me, I'd already listened to the whole album in proper running order), and I have to say,
1) I can definitely tell it's not Nick. It sounds completely unlike his usual straight-ahead, soft touch style. 2) I can't stand it! The rest of the song's production is lovely, but the drumming, now that I've listened to it, kind of gets under my skin. And this is not out of blind loyalty to the Official Drummer of My Favourite Band either; the syncopated snare hits just bother me.
So feel free to enthuse over Jeff Porcaro's drumming (he probably is better than Nick, technically speaking -- I heard a paradiddle in 'Mother' that Nick would probably never attempt), but give me Mason any day. There's nothing fancy about his playing, but it's light and soft and spacious and just fits Pink Floyd to a tee.

I gotta say, I have the utmost respect for this dude in all aspects but pie. We made an apple pie this evening, and it is heavenly manna -- but only with the crust. Pie aside, though, I feel like Nick doesn't get enough love... everyone has been saying Rick was/is underrated, so I don't suppose he is anymore, but no one gives Nick his due... which is why I've made it my duty to fangirl over his drumming as much as possible. I especially adore the stuttery fill in 'Echoes' right between the lines 'And do I take you by the hand' and 'And lead you through the land', which is so particularly memorable that it's almost become a part of the main melody for me -- to the point that I have to beatbox that bit when I sing it. (And most of the rest of the song too, especially the opening ) It's bad.

Things I Love About Nick Mason's Drumming, Chapter 24*
I've noticed, particularly around 'Echoes' era, that he often blurs the line between swing tempo and straight beats. For instance, in the latter part of 'Echoes', he plays the cymbals with a swing, even though it should be a straight beat; he also often used this thing where plays swingy kick drum and straight tom fills, such as in 'Mudmen'.
This gives his playing an extremely laid-back feel, which would almost be sloppy if it weren't so meticulously recorded -- the actual excellence of his drum sound balances the laid-back feel of his playing, and all in all perfectly compliments the Floyd's mellow but scrupulous sound.
GOD I LOVE THAT BAND THEY'RE JUST SO SOLID ❤❤❤❤
*Floyd pun intended
