Not sure if any of you know (I'm thinking that you do, though I may be wrong), but ten years ago today (July 7), Syd Barrett passed away. I haven't had too much time to do so earlier today, so I'll fit in a bit of Floyd time for him now. We love you, Syd! Come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!

No I didn't, thanks for telling me. I was busy celebrating Ringo's birthday. A bit late but... RIP, Roger Keith Barrett, you lovely mad bugger.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to get caught up in other events of the day. Believe me, it's happened to me before. Sidenote: Super cool avatar, FP! I swear you're getting better and better at drawing each time you post something new!

I ran across this when searching for Rickypiccys, and I really do not know what to make of it. Is it incredibly adorable? Or is it incredibly weird? I'm not sure. I mean, I know RickandDave were tight, at least musically, but... I think I'm going for cute. EDIT: Oh dear, this is fearfully cute (if we're thinking this deal is cute) My sister thought it was Mr and Mrs Gilmour.

Today I've been playing Pink Floyd catch-up, listening to some albums I'm not familiar with: Obscured By Clouds I quite liked, and found it much better than I remembered it (my favourite was 'Wots... Uh The Deal')... more of that nice mellow early Floyd which I've found so tasty lately, but a little more poppy (not in a bad way though), and the lyrics just barely hint at things to come with DSOTM. I shall certainly listen to it more often, and a couple tracks are good contenders for my Rickysongs. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason is exactly that-- a lapse of reason on Gilmour's part. (It doesn't deserve its own thread, which is why I'm grousing about it here.) Completely rubbish, front to back; the songs are boring, the production is bleh, and the only good instrumental parts are Dave's guitar solos, which aren't even his best. Plus, there's not enough RICK! Poor little Atom Heart Mother is always called rubbish, even by its creators, but it's a lot better than this-- I officially declare AMLOR to be my least favourite PF album ever (worse even than Ummagumma, which is mostly a waste of vinyl but at least one or two songs are good), and I probably shan't listen to it again-- life is much too short! Now I'm usually a very positive person (I always try to see the best of everything, even if I amn't inclined to it), and incredibly loyal to my favourite persons and things, so for me to so scathingly comment on an album by my most dearly beloved Pinkly Floydsounds means it's really a lotelycrap. I guess it's because it's my dearlybelovedpinkfloyds that I expect More*, but this doesn't deliver. * More is also pretty low on my list; apart from 'Green Is The Colour' and 'Cymbaline' I find it rather dull. But at least it's not trying to be something it's not.

Yet Another Odd-Ended Post (this one more positive, thankfully) I generally take a long time to fall asleep, and when lying there and staring at the ceiling, waiting for a sleepy feeling, my mind often wanders to Floydly topics; this is when I get my best theorising done. Last night, after listening to the magnificent 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' in the velvety darkness, I came up with the notion of likening all the albums to...
wait for it... Food. Ah, that eternally popular subject!
It started with Wish You Were Here, which I've long considered an album that is the musical equivalent of an incredibly satisfying twelve-course meal. I concluded that 'Shine On' is sort of the main course, while the title track is the sort of focal point of the meal; the other two songs are very tasty and perfectly complimentary side dishes. Part IX is a two-part dessert course, which should only be listened to after the rest of the 'meal' has been consumed, because as you know, IF YER DON'T EATCHA MEAT THEN 'OW CAN YOU 'AVE ANY PUDDIN'?! Somewhere along the line, I concluded that Dave's guitar and vocals are like ketchup-- a wonderful flavour that makes everything taste better, but you shouldn't overdo it or it gets too salty. Roger's -ness is like hot sauce-- excellent in small doses and enhances things beautifully, but too much (like The Wall) burns the tongue. Rick is like butter-- he makes everything taste better, but one may scarcely notice his presence until it's absent, and then things taste quite dry. Syd, I just decided, is honey/sugar-- makes marvellous tasty things, but doesn't last long and burns out fast. Hmm, that might need some work... I'll ruminate more. Nick, I have concluded, is peanuts-- mildly flavoured, versatile, and adds the perfect crunch to just about in everything.
I figured that the reason WYWH is so tasty is because it has the perfect amounts of ketchup, hot sauce, butter, and peanuts-- and is in loving homage to Syd so his presence is felt as well-- and is slathered luxuriously on a fabulous set of ingredients (strong ideas, songwriting, etc.). Which made me want to turn the rest of the albums into food.
(N.B.: The following interpretations are exactly that: my own interpretations. Obviously there are some albums that I'm going to slag off a bit because I don't like them as much and some that I'll heap praise on because I love 'em.)
The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn - candy; sweet and sugary but not an overabundance of substance, though that hardly matters because substance is not the point of candy or Piper! A Saucerful Of Secrets - caramel; similar in flavour to Piper but with a little more substance. Also somewhat dark, to my mind (perhaps partly influenced by the album cover, but my interpretations often are. More - I have no idea; perhaps rice. A bit bland, needs something, not much substance (in my opinion). Ummagumma - also no idea. Probably some really weird concoction, like a smoothie that has everything in it just for the sake of it, that is quite hard to eat and few like it much. Atom Heart Mother - a really polarising food, perhaps exotic fruit, that some love and some hate. I find it eminently tasty, of course. Or perhaps Rice Krispies, as I'm rather addicted to them and they're on the album. Meddle - Grilled seafood? I'm not sure. Light and warm. Obscured By Clouds - oatmeal. Going on gut feelings here and I've only heard it twice. The Dark Side Of The Moon - Something indescribably dark and rich that you have to carefully study when consuming; fine wine, perhaps. Though even the most savoury foods fail to sufficiently depict the brilliance of this album. Wish You Were Here - A hearty beef stew with a very thin slice of rich chocolate cake, that leaves you filled and satisfied and is impossible to satisfactorily follow because you want to savour the after-taste. (I think, anyway. Like Dark Side, this one is indescribably brilliant.) Animals - Something dry and spicy, quite spicy due to a slight overabundance of Rogerly hot-sauce, capped with a small but indescribably rich piece of chocolate (otherwise known as 'Pigs On The Wing'). The Wall - An enormous curry in which someone has poured three bottles of Rogerly hot-sauce, and left on the stove for a very long time. Some Floyd albums are half-baked ideas (like AHM); this one, I feel, is over-well-done. Just my opinion, as usual. The Final Cut - I honestly don't remember this one much. I'll just say it's a pasta dish, just because. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason - ah, the hated! Mac and cheese, because it's cheesy. The Division Bell - Crackers and cheese. A bit scattered, but not distasteful (and yes, some bits are slightly cheesy, but not as bad as the previous). The Endless River - No idea whatsoever. I've only heard it 1.5 times, after all. But it's sort of in memoriam of Rick so it must be very buttery.
And now, after typing up this insanely massively long post, I'm getting hungry, if you can believe it! I hope this has been an interesting look at the albums and has similarly encouraged your appetite. Congratulations for reading the whole thing; I even tried to make it easier on your eyes by changing the font.

*is even more overwhelmed* Wow, that's quite the theory, FP! Although I'm not in full agreement with your take of The Wall (I may have found my favourite Floyd ), the rest of it (from the albums I`ve heard, of course) seems pretty accurate! Overall, great job, FP!

'Learning To Fly' is the least awful song from the album, and I figured you wouldn't agree with my slightly scathing asessment of T'Wall, but I figured we'd already agreed to disagree on that one. Sorry about the TWO enormouse-named-Gerald rants! Edit: Nevermind, I hate 'Learning To Fly'. Sorry.

'Ere's another one: I have recently come to the conclusion that whilst Dave's guitar is like ketchup, his voice is gravel and honey. It has both that tenor sweetness and that bit of grit-- though the ratio depends on the day, the singing style, etc. I'm pretty sure Dave's singing is my favourite thing about him.

OH MY GOSH This is an absolutely FASCINATING must-read for all hardcore Crazy Diamonds, 60s culture enthusiasts, etc. It's even helping my chronic Wish-I-Were-There-itis a little bit. Edit: HERE'S MORE!!! (This one doesn't go on quite as much and is a little better-written.)

I am planning on starting a Syd Barrett appreciation thread (quite obvious, really; you'd think someone -- especially ME -- would have already), but I'm rather divided over what the title should be. I've got a couple of ideas, though: -Wouldn't You Miss Me? Love for Syd Barrett (or something like that) -Shine On, Syd! (kinda too obvious) -Piping At The Gates Of Dawn: Syd Barrett Appreciation Thread I kinda like the first one best, but I'm still unsure. As you may know, we also have need of a clever title for the existing Roger Waters appreciation thread. Before you start saying that I must have nothing better to do than sit around and think about Floydy stuff... you're probably Wright though I often Think Floyd whilst doing other things.

The sister and I were discussing 'Green Is The Colour', and I wondered aloud, 'Who do you think the "you" in "Shade my eyes and I can see you" be?' The first person that came to her mind, regardless of the context, was David. 'Oh no, my dear,' said I, 'David would not be wearing a white dress!' The resulting mental image was so hysterically funny that I foolishly allowed her to persuade me to burden my sketchbook with it. Alas. {Look at your own risk} [/ spoiler]

Pink Floyd has a lot of long songs, but can you name their top ten longest? Apparently, I couldn't. I Googled it and found this quiz: m.sporcle.com/games/dudemanbearpig/longest-pink-floyd-songsI got 75%, which isn't bad, but I still found it rather humbling (I missed 'Saucerful' and the Ummagumma tracks ).
